This year, 2022 marks the 60th anniversary of that fateful day in 1962 when a 24-year-old Donald Knuth started writing “https://www-cs-faculty.stanford.edu/~knuth/taocp.html.” Because of the pandemic, it’s been three years since Knuth has been able to honor this tradition.

The next mathematical curio was Baxter permutation, a kind of number series for which Knuth offered a beautifully simple definition.

All these scenarios retain the original unique property of the Baxter sequence, Knuth reiterated to the audience.

Amazingly, when using that final method of diagramming, every sequence of numbers that’s a Baxter permutation gives you a valid floorplan.
