Editor’s note: StepZen CEO Anant Jhingran and DataStax Chief Product Officer Ed Anuff were colleagues at Apigee and Google. It’s been a longstanding statement by graph data experts that graph databases and GraphQL are two completely different, unrelated things.

Yet that relationship can’t be reduced to a soundbite, and neither can the story of graph data and GraphQL.

GraphQL is a natural query language for graph databases where relationships are explicitly created, albeit lacking some of the semantic reasoning that relationship-based data requires.

In GraphQL, it’s in the metadata and the schema structure; in the case of a graph database, it‘s in the data.
