Indeed, it’s the protocol that underlies much of https://thenewstack.io/the-fediverse-points-to-our-social-media-future-post-musk/, the unofficial name for a growing list of federated social networks.

It’s being used by decentralized social network products like Manyverse and Planetary (the latter was built by https://twitter.com/rabble, the very first employee at Twitter).
