The Geospatial Developer and Systems Administratordevelops and maintains NYBG’s urban conservation suite of digital platforms and tools, including applications in exhibitions; on mobile devices; and on the web. These applications will enhance ecological democracy and literacy in New York City by utilizing the substantial georeferenced, historical ecology for New York City from the Mannahatta and Welikia Projects and ecosystem service models and assets from Visionmaker.nyc. Although created for New York City in the first instance, applications will be designed with transferability in mind to other culturally important urban centers. The developer will be responsible for implementing programming solutions that leverage GIS data, ecological models, and other scientific resources. As systems administrator, the individual will work closely with NYBG’s Information Technology team to ensure safety and security and continual access to resources managing dynamic demands. Digital applications could come in many forms, including messaging, mobile, browser, and physical exhibition materials. Such applications will be designed to leverage information and technology across applications and must be deployable to audiences on multiple platforms (e.g. Android, iOS, major browsers, etc.).
This position reports to the Vice President of Urban Conservation.

Specific Duties & Responsibilities Exhibition Development
• Develop and maintain digital applications leveraging the georeferenced historical ecology assets of the Mannahatta and Welikia Projects. Such assets include location-specific visualizations of the historical landscape condition; distributional maps of species, notably plants, ecosystems, and abiotic factors such as topography, soil type, streams, wetlands, and coastlines; georeferenced historical maps from the 17C – 20C; “Muir web” based network analysis of ecological interconnections; the distributions of Indigenous peoples and their use of fire to manage the landscape; a database of historical placenames; a library of georeferenced historical maps; associated bibliographies, documents, papers and analyses.
• Develop and maintain digital applications leveraging georeferenced data about the current and future city including maps of buildings, streets, and other ecosystems; lifestyle parameters; and climate scenarios, as part of the Visionmaker.nyc platform. Working with NYBG scientists, code, improve, and maintain ecosystem models of services provided by nature in the city, including water cycling, carbon cycling, biodiversity support, geography, population, and economics. Working with NYBG scientists, develop a framework for extending these models to cover air pollution, urban heat, food provision, and environmental justice. Help develop techniques to incorporate technologies from other fields (e.g. video games, architectural renderings, social media) to enhance NYBG digital applications.
• Day-to-day management of and responsibility to maintain welikia.org and visionmaker.nyc in coordination with NYBG’s Marketing and Communications team. Provide user and technical sources, highlight problems and develop solutions, monitor web traffic, manage hosting and cloud computing environments.
• Work in close coordination with technical, scientific, and administrative staff, and outside vendors; ensure a positive, collaborative, respectful and impactful work environment, including developing and monitoring schedules and calendars, budgets, tasking, and communications. Provide timely feedback. Identify and address problems with practical solutions.
• Coordinate with other NYBG divisions including IT, Exhibitions and Public Programming, and Science, including our Spatial Analysis Laboratory housed in the Herbarium.
• Assist with fundraising, communications with donors, and preparation of project reports for funders.
• Communicate externally through presentations, technical talks, and networking.
Qualifications
• A minimum of 3 years of experience in development of digital applications, especially applications that rely on georeferenced data. Development of application across multiple platforms is a plus, notably mobile and web.
• College degree required, Master’s degree (computer science) preferred. Technical certifications or equivalent experience a plus.
• Proven experience with Javascript, Python, PHP, SQL, and associated libraries and frameworks; experience with HTML, CSS a plus.
• Facility with GIS (ArcGIS, QGIS, Geopandas, etc.)
• Facility with Github and project management software (e.g. Asana).
• Familiarity with Google Cloud Platform and Amazon Web Services.
• Experience in video game (e.g. Unity, Unreal Engine, etc.), landscape visualization (e.g. Virtual Nature Studio, Vue, World Creator, City Engine, etc.) and interactive exhibition design a plus.
• Ability to keep multiple creative and complex projects focused, on-track, and aligned with institutional goals and mission while prioritizing appropriately. Cognizance of the importance of schedules and budgets.
• Ability to communicate progress quickly, efficiently, and transparently to management, in written and verbal form.
• Knowledge of and concern for urban planning and conservation issues. Preference for New York City-specific experience.
• An understanding of and commitment to resolving environmental justice issues is essential.

Salary: Commensurate with experience within the following range: $127,500-$150,000 annually
Hybrid Remote Work: 1 – 2 remote days a week.
