Hello NYC Kubernauts!

For October, we're grooving our way over to a new space at the World Trade Center; this month, we'll visit Spotify's posh new office space on the 71st floor.

We're excited to welcome Kris Nova to the group for the first time. She will demo how taking the must fundamental component of a Linux system (syscall data) and bubbling that up to an API driven application in Userland has given us powerful visibility and control over the complexity of a Kubernetes cluster. We'll learn about the eBPF protocol, and how it enables us to safely and securely parse this information. Furthermore, we look at how we are able to parse this data at runtime. You'll walk away understanding how these primitives work, and how tools like Falco empower us to have never before seen control over a Linux system.

We'll also dig into technical and financial efficiencies practices for K8s with Spotify SRE Danielle Zephyr Malament. Efficient container orchestration requires learning an entirely new paradigm of resource management. Kubernetes, in particular, has many knobs one can turn which can drastically impact cost, latency, and downtime. In this talk they will introduce some of these knobs, what they do, and how to tune them to maximize your financial and technical happiness.

SPEAKER BIOS

Kris Nova, Chief Open Source Advocate at Sysdig, focuses on security, intrusion detection, and the Linux kernel with Kubernetes and eBPF. As an active advocate for open source, Nova is an ambassador for the CNCF and the creator of kubicorn, a successful Kubernetes infrastructure management tool. Nova joins Sysdig from Heptio/VMWare, where she was a Senior Developer Advocate. Prior to VMWare, Nova was at Deis/Microsoft, where she was a developer advocate and an engineer on Kubernetes. Nova has a deep technical background in the Go programming language and has authored many successful open source tools in Go. Nova has organized many special interest groups in Kubernetes. She is a leader in the community. She understands the frustration with running cloud-native infrastructure via a distributed cloud-native application and authored an O’Reilly book on the topic, Cloud Native Infrastructure. Nova lives in Seattle and spends her free time climbing mountains.

Danielle Zephyr Malament is a Site Reliability Engineer at Spotify. They have been fiddling with computers since getting a Commodore 64 as a kid. Previous jobs in their 10-ish year career include systems administration at small managed hosting companies, starting an anonymous ISP, and Production Engineering at Facebook. They enjoy automating things so they Just Work. In their spare time, they are into science fiction, linguistics, and long conversations that go down rabbit holes.

We’ll be hosting at a different World Trade Center building this time, but we all should still be aware that the building takes security seriously.
