(Trigger Warning) What is Infrastructure as Code?

Abstract
========
Discussion with the group about What is Infrastructure as Code starting from the work that we've been doing in the Digital Rebar project. Digital Rebar is a good starting point because we've done some unique composable, immutable and code-driven configuration that's designed to create repeatable multi-datacenter automation. The talk will focus on the principles and then show what they look like implemented. Also, talk about lessons learned that lead to the design.

Why does search still suck? Consider crowdsourcing it.

Abstract
========
Have you ever noticed that the user interface of last resort for almost everything is the search box? If so you have probably also noticed that the results often disappoint. Why is that? Max Bell will spend some time showing you examples of how searches can be so hard to get right even for large well-funded organizations. Then Max will suggest and demonstrate a better way through some simple machine learning feedback that allows users to teach a search system how to boost the ranking of things they find more appealing automatically so the next user won't have to dig for the same item. Max works for Lucidworks, the commercial sponsor of the Apache Solr search engine project. Lucidworks helps the largest organizations in the world better solve their biggest data problems to gain insight.

Max enjoys working with people using computers to gain insight in science, education, government, and business. So plotting orbital solutions using Vax timeshare terminals at UT Austin was fun for him. He claims virtualization and containerization are just fancy chroot so don't ask if you don't have time. Also, try to avoid discussing aviation since he taught people to fly upside down for a living. He's determined to show the next generation how to do more with less. Once a year he drags his wife Monika and their 3 children, Kira, Imogene and Murray up mountains and across deserts insisting over their objections that its quality family time.
