Data durability refers to preventing data loss due to foreseen or unforeseen failures. This is not a simple true or false question that can be answered through software design but involves architecting, hardware, software, and operational practices. Bruce Markey will discuss data durability using Apache Kafka which has features that are typical for distributed systems clusters and some features that may be unique.

Bruce Markey has been a Silicon Valley System Administrator dating back to 1990 and has been a member of BayLISA since the first meeting in the early '90s. In recent years he has been an Operations Engineer for distributed systems at Amazon's A9 and Twitter, and an enterprise software Technical Support Engineer for Couchbase and currently Confluent. Confluent was founded by the original developers of Apache
Kafka.
