DevOps Exchange - Lockdown Special

Here at the DevOps Exchange, we understand just how much things have changed over the last few weeks, and how hard we are all working to adjust to the new normal.

And we miss you!

To help keep you all engaged in the global DevOps Community and to try and lift some spirits, we wanted to arrange a DevOps Exchange event with a slight twist, the Lockdown Special.

This is why we have gathered 4 speakers to take part in a virtual event, broadcast live to all of our communities around the world.

Join us, via Video Link, on the 14th April at 5:30pm.

You'll hear two talks from our very own DevOps Exchange Community Leaders from Edinburgh and Barcelona, along with a talk on Serverless Containers with knative from Google and fintech start up Ziglu on the Bazel build system.

We'll have 4 x 20 minute talks starting at 5:30pm sharp. Questions will be run through the Sli.do platform.

We can't provide beer and pizza to everyone, however, we are running a competition to get a pizza delivered for the event to 10 attendees. RSVP to be in with a chance of winning!

Serverless Containers with Knative and Cloud Run

When you build an app, you typically need to choose agility with serverless or flexibility with containers, but not both. But why does it have to be that way? Wouldn’t it be nice to have the best of both worlds?

In this talk, we’ll explore the open source project Knative and its managed version Cloud Run. Through a series of demos, we’ll see how these projects enable you to deploy and manage containers in a serverless way on wherever you want, on-prem or in the cloud.

As a long-time Java and C# developer, Mete likes to compare the two ecosystems. Prior to Google, he worked at Microsoft, Skype, Adobe, EMC, and Nokia building apps and services on various web, mobile and cloud platforms.

DevOps in a highly regulated environment - Aiming high like a Unicorn in skates

Fintech is one of the most exciting sectors, advancing rapidly and creating new ways to deal with governance and compliance required in the Financial Industry. Old financial institutions with legacy and regulatory process already in place are also transforming to be competitive in this market. I'll tell you some of the solutions that we have envisioned at Nationwide to leap forward and be more agile and useful for our members.

How *NOT* to build a great DevOps Team”

There are many resources out in the wild that tell you, or guide you through how to build a great DevOps team. This talk aims to cover the other side, what you shouldn’t do, but a lot of people and companies do...do.

Bazel is a build system. Bored yet?

Bazel is a build system where you declare your builds in terms of binaries and tests; the library knows all the compiler flags.
It produces byte-for-byte identical outputs in a hermetic sandbox, and pins the version of everything including the compiler.
It can use remote build farms and caches, and decide that 100k source files *don’t* need to be rebuilt in 200ms. This isn’t your grandad’s Maven

Bazel is great for DevOps engineers.
We SREs should be software engineers, and we should be good ones. Bazel is a useful and interesting software engineering tool that everyone should be at least familiar with.

We'll run over its design and features, then build a simple Go project up from scratch.

RSVP today to register for our online DevOps Exchange Event.

"See" you all soon,
